Notes from the score: Bad Juju draws many influences from the title’s African origins and its dark, karmic, and witchcraft-like connotations. While not telling a programmatic story, it depicts moods and environments that reveal the effect that the title had on the composer. The instrumentation of three marimbas (one played by two performers) and a large collection of traditional African instruments was a very conscious decision—one that should allow each listener to experience the work in a unique way.

Bad Juju was written for and is dedicated to Omar Carmenates and the Furman University Percussion Ensemble.
